Transunion offers a free alternative, TrueIdentity, which allows you to lock your credit report and reopen it at will. I chose that one for now. They were, however, the most difficult of the three agencies to work with. Freezing the other two was easy, which surprised me, given what I’d read and heard. Transunion’s site was hell to work with and even after I’d been “accepted,” I had to make several phone calls when the site refused to “verify” me. But I did get it done, and I’m hoping being able to lock and unlock at will turns out to be a solid solution.
