I think my contact with people on the front lines of the immigration struggle makes me a bit more sensitive than I might be otherwise. And yet, somehow, as soon as I heard the executive orders, a warning bell went off — especially the idea of sending the feds to Chicago? Where do you see that kind of thing? Who does that kind of thing, to keep “order?” That scared me most, I think. Because it seems to spiral into rounding up people for things other than drug dealing or violence, over time. And that’s what I’m most afraid of. I’ve seen how they grabbed people here for minor traffic violations to send them back across the border. They could do that to others as well, to shut them up or bully them into giving up the struggle.
